Titanium foil-sealed thermoelectric generator for seafloor hydrothermal vent

The seafloor hydrothermal activity observation equipment needs a stable electric power supply; this study explored the thermoelectric generator (TEG) as the in-situ power supply method. The TEG can utilize the considerable temperature difference of the hydrothermal vent to supply electricity for the observation system. We use the titanium foil combined with the O-ring as the sealing component, thus can decrease the cold side thermal resistance and obtain a compact structure. The pressure test result shows the TEG can withstand pressure up to 20 MPa without leakage. Furthermore, a simulation is conducted to evaluate the temperature distribution of the TEG. To reduce heat loss, Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) material is used as the heat insulation layer at the surface of TEG. The simulation shows that adding the heat insulation layer can increase the hot side temperature by 4.9–7 K. The pool power generation results show that the novel structure TEG can realize 22 W output at the hot fluid temperature of 467 K. This study provides a novel sealing method for seafloor equipment with corrosion-resisting and low thermal resistance features.

Re-Os geochronology of the Middle to Upper Jurassic marine black shales in the Agardhfjellet Formation, Central Spitsbergen, Svalbard: A cornerstone for global faunal correlation and Os isotopic change

Ammonite provincialism makes it difficult to link the Boreal and Tethyan realms during the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous time. Absolute ages through radiometric dating offer new age information that is independent and complementary to relative ages based on biostratigraphy. In this study, we report seven new Re-Os ages for black shales from the Agardhfjellet Formation, Svalbard. We also report pyrolysis results, carbon and sulfur stable isotopic data, and initial 187Os/188Os ratios to evaluate the paleoenvironment during organic-rich shale deposition. Re-Os ages are derived from three Boreal ammonite zones: (1) 159.2 and 160.1 Ma from the shale intervals containing Cadoceras sp.; (2) 149.6, 149.9, 150.8, and 151.9 Ma from the Rasenia cymodoce Zone in the Early Kimmeridgian, which is the equivalent of the Sutneria platynota and Ataxioceras hypselocyclum zones in the Tethyan realm; (3) 146.8 Ma from an upper Volgian interval above the occurrence of Laugeites sp.. Within this 14.5 Myr interval, the initial Os profile shows a gradually increasing trend from 0.335 (one of the lowest shale values throughout the Phanerozoic) to 0.529, consistent with previous initial Os studies and Sr isotopic ratio chemostratigraphic studies. The trend of increasing initial Os ratios indicates an increase in continental runoff relative to unradiogenic Os input from mantle sources, such as seafloor hydrothermal activity or ultramafic source rocks. We provide new Re-Os geochronological anchors in the Late Jurassic with new Re-Os ages and propose correlations of specific Late Jurassic ammonite zones between the Tethyan and Boreal realms. In turn, the gradual increase in seawater Os isotopic ratios may signal climate change in the Late Jurassic, indicating the increase of radiogenic Os or decrease of unradiogenic Os, induced by high continental runoff or less hydrothermal/volcanic activity.

Battery-free temperature logger for deep-sea hydrothermal fluids based on heat pipe heat exchangers and thermoelectric generators.

Long-term in situ measurements of the temperature of hydrothermal fluids have great significance in the research of seafloor hydrothermal activities. Herein, we developed a self-powered battery-free temperature logger for measuring and recording the temperature of hydrothermal fluids. A gravity heat pipe made of titanium alloy was employed as the heat-conducting element of the temperature logger to capture heat from a hydrothermal vent and transfer it to the thermoelectric unit. The thermoelectric generator used herein converted the temperature difference into electrical energy to power the circuit of the temperature logger. Numerical analyses and experiments were performed to investigate the performance of the heat pipe and temperature logger. Results show that the temperature logger can realize self-powered starting at a temperature of >76 °C during a tank test. This paper presents a discussion on a new instrument for temperature measurements of deep-sea hydrothermal fluids.

Marine osmium isotopic composition reconstructed from the early Permian umber deposit in the Japanese accretionary complex

• Re-Os isotopes of early Permian umbers in Japan were analyzed. • Oxidative Mn-oxides prevented Re fixation into the Kunimiyama umbers. • 187 Os/ 188 Os values of early Permian seawater ranged from 0.523 to 0.676. Strata-bound ferromanganese (Fe–Mn) deposits (umbers) are thought to have formed by precipitation of Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides derived from seafloor hydrothermal activity at a mid-oceanic ridge. Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides effectively adsorb various elements (e.g., P, V, As, rare earth elements, and Os) dissolved in seawater. Of these elements, osmium (Os) is particularly important for reconstructing the Earth’s surface environment during formation of the deposits. Here we report the Os and rhenium (Re) contents and marine Os isotopic ratio ( 187 Os/ 188 Os) i of the early Permian reconstructed from the Kunimiyama umber deposit in the Northern Chichibu Belt, central Shikoku, southwest Japan. The Kunimiyama umbers exhibit comparable to slightly lower Os (42–183 ppt) and much lower Re (1.3–49 ppt) contents than other umbers in Japanese accretionary complexes and modern seafloor metalliferous sediments, the latter of which are regarded as umber precursors. The ( 187 Os/ 188 Os) i ratio of the Kunimiyama umbers is 0.523–0.676, which is comparable to or slightly higher than the values of the middle to Late Cretaceous and early Paleogene. This work is the first report of seawater Os isotope ratios in the Panthalassa Ocean of the early Permian, representing an important achievement in understanding the marine Os isotopic record of the Paleozoic Era.

Deep sourced magma and ore-metal mobility in the D. João de Castro submarine volcano (Azores): a mineral chemistry and melt inclusion study

The D. João de Castro is a submarine volcano with known hydrothermal activity located in the Terceira ultra-slow spreading rift within the Azores triple junction (ATJ). Several well-known mafic and ultramafic rock-hosted seafloor hydrothermal systems lay along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, to the north and to the south of the Azores platform, yet little is known about seafloor hydrothermal activity, ore-metal availability, and magmatic–hydrothermal interactions within the ATJ. Here, we investigate multi-phase melt inclusions hosted in early formed phenocrysts (olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase), and metallic precipitates found in groundmass vesicles. Combining detailed petrographic observations with geochemical data and thermobarometry calculations, we assess P–T conditions of early formed phenocrysts, melt pathways towards surface, timing of sulfide saturation and composition of immiscible sulfide melts. Results show that D. João de Castro is characterized by a multi-level magmatic system where primary melt segregated from the upper mantle and moved up through the oceanic crust with little residence time. Sulfide saturation with the formation of immiscible magmatic sulfide liquid (Fe–Ni–Cu) occurred early in primitive magmas with clinopyroxene and olivine crystallization and continued during plagioclase crystallization. At shallower levels, the magmatic degassing of volatiles carrying base metals (Cu–Zn–Pb–Co) and Ba have contributed to the element budget of the D. João de Castro hydrothermal system. The study of multi-phase melt inclusions and vesicles at D. João de Castro submarine volcano contributes to the understanding of source to surface magmatic processes at the Terceira Rift and underline the importance of magmatic degassing into seafloor hydrothermal systems.

Volatile‐Rich Hydrothermal Plumes Over the Southern Central Indian Ridge, 24°49’S: Evidence for a New Hydrothermal Field Hosted by Ultramafic Rocks

AbstractWater column physico‐chemical studies were conducted over the southern Central Indian Ridge between 24°44’S and 25°52’S to identify and chemically characterize seafloor hydrothermal activity. High turbidity values were observed between 2300 and 2700 m with two distinct layers, between water depths of 2320–2500 m and 2510–2650 m, at two closely spaced CTD stations at 24°48.62’S (CTD‐17‐P5) and 24°48.68’S (CTD‐17‐P8). Elevated concentrations of dissolved Mn (DMn: 19–112 nM), dissolved Fe (DFe: 33–88 nM), methane (CH4: 32–246 nM), elevated δ3He values (28%–88%), and stable carbon isotope ratios of CH4 confirm the hydrothermal origin. In plume layer‐1, the maximum concentrations were observed at 2375m at P8 and in plume layer‐2, the maximum concentrations were observed at 2570 m at P5. The stable isotope ratios of methane (δ13C‐CH4) show that heavier isotopes are enriched (−13.2‰ to −14.7‰) in the plume waters and are similar to vent fluids on the global mid‐oceanic ridges. Further, morphological and mineralogical studies of plume particles, collected from the plume layer‐2 maxima, clearly show the presence of barite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and indicate possible venting of high‐temperature fluids in the vicinity of P5. Enrichment in methane relative to the other tracers and the general geochemical characteristics of these two plume layers, CH4/Mn (1.8–2.2); CH4/Δ3He (85–97 × 106), Mn/Δ3He (44–46 × 106), Fe/Δ3He (52–54 × 106), indicate that these plumes are formed from fluids released at the seafloor that circulated through ultramafic/gabbroic rocks. The high concentrations of dissolved gases and metals combined with the presence of sulfide particles in the water column provide evidence for a new ultramafic/gabbroic‐hosted hydrothermal vent field, at 24°49’S on the southern Central Indian Ridge.

Hydrothermal remobilization of subseafloor sulfide mineralization along mid-ocean ridges contributes to the global oceanic zinc isotopic mass balance

Hydrothermal activity on mid-ocean ridges is an important mechanism for the delivery of Zn from the mantle to the surface environment. Zinc isotopic fractionation during hydrothermal activity is mainly controlled by the precipitation of Zn-bearing sulfide minerals, in which isotopically light Zn is preferentially retained in solid phases rather than in solution during mineral precipitation. Thus, seafloor hydrothermal activity is expected to supply isotopically heavy Zn to the ocean. Here, we studied sulfide-rich samples from the Duanqiao-1 hydrothermal field, located on the Southwest Indian Ridge. We report that, at the hand-specimen scale, late-stage conduit sulfide material has lower δ66Zn values (−0.05 ± 0.15 ‰; n = 19) than early-stage material (+0.13 ± 0.15 ‰; n = 10). These lower values correlate with enrichments in Pb, As, Cd, and Ag, and elevated δ34S values. We attribute the low δ66Zn values to the remobilization of earlier sub-seafloor Zn-rich mineralization. Based on endmember mass balance calculations, and an assumption of a fractionation factor (αZnS-Sol.) of about 0.9997 between sphalerite and its parent solution, the remobilized Zn was found consist of about 1/3 to 2/3 of the total Zn in the fluid that formed the conduit samples. Our study suggests that late-stage subsurface hydrothermal remobilization may release isotopically-light Zn to the ocean, and that this process may be common along mid-ocean ridges, thus increasing the size of the previously identified isotopically light Zn sink in the ocean.

Seafloor Hydrothermal Activity around a Large Non-Transform Discontinuity along Ultraslow-Spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (48.1–48.7° E)

Non-transform discontinuity (NTD) is one category of tectonic units along slow- and ultraslow-spreading ridges. Some NTD-related hydrothermal fields that may reflect different driving mechanisms have been documented along slow-spreading ridges, but the discrete survey strategy makes it hard to evaluate the incidence of hydrothermal activity. On ultraslow-spreading ridges, fewer NTD-related hydrothermal activities were reported. Factors contributing to the occurrence of hydrothermal activities at NTDs and whether they could be potential targets for hydrothermal exploration are poorly known. Combining turbidity and oxidation reduction potential (ORP) sensors with a near-bottom camera, Chinese Dayang cruises from 2014 to 2018 have conducted systematic towed surveys for hydrothermal activity around a large NTD along the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR, 48.1–48.7° E). Five new potential hydrothermal anomaly sites (2 inferred and 3 suspected) of high or low temperature and the previously inferred Sudi hydrothermal field occurred in diverse morphotectonic settings along a 78 km long ridge axis. The calculated vent frequency (Fs, sites/100 km) was ~7.7 over the entire study area, higher than the modified value (Fs ≈ 6.5) between 48 and 52° E of SWIR. Even only for the 54 km long large NTD, three hydrothermal anomaly sites yielded an Fs of ~5.6, which is higher than that of most ridge sections and is comparable to some fast-spreading ridges with high-resolution surveys. This indicates that NTDs along ultraslow-spreading ridges could be promising areas in fertilizing hydrothermal activities. Moreover, the deeply penetrating faults on the rift valley walls and strain-focused areas may contribute to the formation of NTD-related hydrothermal circulations. We suggest that NTDs along ultraslow-spreading ridges may be potential targets for further exploration of hydrothermal activities and seafloor sulfide deposits.

Mercury in the hydrothermal fluids and gases in Paleochori Bay, Milos, Greece

Seafloor hydrothermal activity may constitute a considerable mercury (Hg) source to the oceans, but the flux from marine shallow-water hydrothermal systems (MSWHS) remains poorly constrained to date. To study the presence of Hg in MSWHS in Paleochori Bay (Milos Island, Greece), sea surface, bottom, pore fluid and hydrothermal gas samples were collected in June of 2017, October of 2018 and July of 2020, and analyzed for Cl, Br, SO4, As, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Si, Sr, H2S, unfiltered total Hg (THg), and filtered Hg (Hgdiss). Specific sites were selected for the analysis of volatile elemental Hg (Hgo), dimethylmercury (DMHg), monomethylmercury (MMHg), and Hg in the gas phase (Hggas). Concentrations of THg observed in samples collected from the sea surface were elevated compared to surface samples taken outside Paleochori Bay. The highest surface water concentrations (~10 to 15 pM) were measured in samples collected directly above shallow-water hydrothermal discharge areas. Pore fluids outside Paleochori Bay were significantly lower in THg (0.8 to 8.6 pM) than those taken inside (17.4 to 1511 pM). Porewaters collected from areas with visible gaseous or fluid emission were highly variable but generally elevated in THg concentrations (185 to 5066 pM). Concentrations within gases ranged from 0.7 to 2791 nmol/m3. The vast majority of samples with highly elevated THg (> 100 pM) had low Na/K ratios (< 15), indicative of rapidly rising fluid. Concentrations of Hg0, DMHg, and MMHg were below detection limits in all samples.Bottom substrate type (e.g., rocky vs. sediment covered) likely affected infiltration rates of oxygenated seawater below the sediment-water interface, thereby affecting Hg speciation and removal by precipitation. Flux rates from porewaters compared to those with gaseous emission were high (12.56 to 1088 mol THg/year and 0.37 to 1.85 mol THg/year). Sites with slow gaseous emission rates are hypothesized to have extended subsurface reaction times, resulting in lower Hg concentrations emitted to bottom waters. However, increasing rates of gas emission did not necessarily indicate higher Hg concentrations. The scavenging of Hg in the sediments and advective flux out of Paleochori Bay likely prevent significant accumulations of THg in the water column of Paleochori Bay. The total atmospheric flux from Paleochori Bay using average flux calculations over the entire surface area would contribute 6 mmol Hg/year to the atmosphere.We hypothesize that Hg concentrations within the pore fluids of Paleochori Bay reflect a balance between mixing and precipitation in the subsurface. A three-component mixing system of vapor, brine and seawater determines THg concentrations; however, precipitation due to sulfur cycling, changes in redox conditions and temperature, all play a crucial role in removing Hg from emitted fluids and gases.

A new prediction method of seafloor hydrothermal active field based on wavelet neural network

The study of modern seafloor hydrothermal activity and its mineralization has become one of the focuses of global geoscience. Accurate prediction of possible seafloor hydrothermal active fields is the basis of all research work. The detecting method for new seafloor hydrothermal activity still is mainly dependent on marine site investigation. This includes a series of temperature, turbidity, and geochemical anomaly investigations using submarine cameras and manned diving investigation. Both of these require expensive financial, human, and material resources. In order to realize the accurate prediction of potential hydrothermal activity areas in a low cost manner, with strong pertinence, and a wide range, we propose a prediction method of seafloor hydrothermal active region based on Wavelet Neural Network. First, we integrated the hydrothermal position information from the InterRidge Vents Database with the hydrothermal temperature information form the Argo Database to construct a data set. Then, we combined wavelet analysis with an artificial neural network to create a wavelet neural network optimization algorithm. Finally, the temperature and salinity data were input to the wavelet neural network to predict the seafloor hydrothermal active region. Sevenfold cross validation was used to evaluate the performance of the model and 90.43% prediction accuracy was achieved. The results of experiments show that salinity is not related to the existence of hydrothermal activity fields but rather that the surrounding water temperature has a strong correlation with hydrothermal existence. Therefore, it is effectively feasible to use the wavelet neural network model with an input of seawater temperature to predict seafloor hydrothermal activity fields. Although artificial neural network cannot completely replace traditional hydrothermal exploration technology, it can provide a valuable reference with a strong target.

Enhanced hydrothermal activity on an ultraslow-spreading supersegment with a seismically detected melting anomaly

Seafloor hydrothermal venting fields occur on all ocean spreading ridges (OSRs) regardless of spreading rates. However, the distribution of seafloor hydrothermal activity such as frequency and spacing on ultraslow-spreading OSRs are poorly known. Chinese Dayang cruises from 2015 to 2016 conducted detailed water column surveys for seafloor hydrothermal activity using a towed system, with an array of turbidity sensors and a near-bottom camera, along the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge. Here we report the discovery of multiple hydrothermal plumes overlying segments 28, 29, and 30 between the Indomed and Gallieni fracture zones. From these data, and earlier explorations in segments 25–27, we identify nine active venting sites. The spatial density (Fs, sites/100 km) of active sites along the 394 km of ridge axis in our study area is thus 2.8, nearly 3× higher than predicted by the global trend of Fs for ultraslow OSRs in the InterRidge database. Previous studies concluded that an enhanced magma supply to the central Indomed–Gallieni supersegment 11–8 Ma is now limited to segment 27. Our results indicate that although hydrothermal activity may be most concentrated in segment 27, the discoveries of active venting in segments 25–30 implies the presence of additional magma bodies across a broad extent of the Indomed–Gallieni supersegment.

Elevated turbidity and dissolved manganese in deep water column near 10°47’S Central Indian Ridge: studies on hydrothermal activities

The deep water in the ridge segment between 10°18’S and 10°57’S of northern Central Indian Ridge was surveyed with CTD and AUV for seafloor hydrothermal activities. During the survey, 25 CTD hydrocasts were made, and seawater samples were collected for analyses of chemical tracers like dissolved manganese (DMn). In the rift valley between 10°40’S and 10°57’S, consistent backscatter anomalies (up to 0.013 ΔNTU) were found in deep water, indicating excess of suspended particulate at the depth between 3050 and 3500 m. The seawater samples from this turbid layer was characterized with high concentration of dissolved manganese (maximum DMn = 39 nmol/L) and excess helium-3 (maximum δ3He = 17.1%) and thus confirmed the possible hydrothermal activities in that area. The distribution of turbidity and DMn in deep water apparently suggests that there could be active vent(s) located close to the eastern wall (10°47.5’S; 66°38.6’E) of the valley, near southern end of the ridge segment. The physiochemical characters of the plume suggest the source fluid might have originated from reactions involving both mafic and ultramafic rocks, and its nature is comparable to other plumes in the Indian Ocean.

The Mineral Composition and Sources of the Fine-Grained Sediments from the 49.6°E Hydrothermal Field at the SWIR

We used the X-ray diffraction method to determine systematically the mineral phases in bulk sediment samples and acid undissolved residuals of the fine-grained fraction of the surface sediments from the 49.6°E hydrothermal field at the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and discussed the mineral sources of the surface sediments. The results showed that the surface sediments in this region were composed of calcareous ooze, and calcite was the dominant mineral. The sediments also contained quartz, feldspar, clay minerals, pyroxene, sphalerite, barite, serpentine, and magnetite. The quartz, feldspar, and clay minerals were exogenous minerals that mainly originated from the Namib and Kalahari deserts in southern Africa. The pyroxene, serpentine, magnetite, sphalerite, calcite, and barite were endogenous minerals from weathering of seafloor basement rocks and seafloor hydrothermal activities. The sulfide particles in the sediments were mainly deposited from upwelling plumes.

Seafloor hydrothermal activity along mid-ocean ridge with strong melt supply: study from segment 27, southwest Indian ridge

Continuous tow investigations have shown that the present vent field inventory along fast to intermediate spreading ridges may be underestimated by at least 3–6 times, while the limited towed line investigations of venting sites along slow to ultra-slow spreading ridges make it impossible to determine their distribution. The Chinese Dayang cruise has conducted detailed towed line surveys of hydrothermal activity on segment 27 of the ultra-slow spreading southwest Indian ridge in 2015. The results have identified as many as 9 hydrothermal fields along 85-km-long segment, including one confirmed hydrothermal field, three inferred hydrothermal fields and five suspected fields. Hydrothermal activities are not only limited along-axis but also found approximately 10 km away from the axis. These vent fields are likely powered by a seismically identified axial magma chamber, including melt migration along normal faults to flank areas. The calculated hydrothermal activity frequency on segment 27 is approximately 3.6–8 times higher than that calculated from the Interridge database, suggesting that careful system exploration can reveal more hydrothermal activities even on ultra-slow spreading ridges effected by hotspot.

Smectite formation in metalliferous sediments near the East Pacific Rise at 13°N

A 43 cm long E271 sediment core collected near the East Pacific Rise (EPR) at 13°N were studied to investigate the origin of smectite for understanding better the geochemical behavior of hydrothermal material after deposition. E271 sediments are typical metalliferous sediments. After removal of organic matter, carbonate, biogenic opal, and Fe-Mn oxide by a series of chemical procedures, clay minerals (<2 μm) were investigated by X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis and Si isotope analysis. Due to the influence of seafloor hydrothermal activity and close to continent, the sources of clay minerals are complex. Illite, chlorite and kaolinite are suggested to be transported from either North or Central America by rivers or winds, but smectite is authigenic. It is enriched in iron, and its contents are highest in clay minerals. Data show that smectite is most likely formed by the reaction of hydrothermal Fe-oxyhydroxide with silica and seawater in metalliferous sediments. The Si that participates in this reaction may be derived from siliceous microfossils (diatoms or radiolarians), hydrothermal fluids, or detrital mineral phases. And their δ30Si values are higher than those of authigenic smectites, which implies that a Si isotope fractionation occurs during the formation because of the selective absorption of light Si isotopes onto Feoxyhydroxides. Sm/Fe mass ratios (a proxy for overall REE/Fe ratio) in E271 clay minerals are lower than those in metalliferous sediments, as well as distal hydrothermal plume particles and terrigenous clay minerals. This result suggests that some REE are lost during the smectite formation, perhaps because their large ionic radii of REE scavenged by Fe-oxyhydroxides preclude substitution in either tetrahedral or octahedral lattice sites of this mineral structure, which decreases the value of metalliferous sediments as a potential resource for REE.

Geochemical impacts of hydrothermal activity on surface deposits at the Southwest Indian Ridge

Submarine hydrothermal circulation has attracted much scientific interest since seafloor hydrothermal activity was first observed in the 1970s; an area of particular interest is the impact of exported inorganic and organic materials from hydrothermal vent systems into the open ocean. In 2007, the first active hydrothermal vent field, with vent fluid temperatures up to 379 °C, was discovered at the ultraslow spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR), where active vents are much less abundant than fast spreading ridges, and the effect of hydrothermal extrusion on surface sediments is not fully understood. To explore how geochemical proxy signatures respond to hydrothermal activity, we investigated the distributions of elements, minerals and lipids in surficial normal marine sediments, metalliferous sediments and low-temperature hydrothermal deposits collected from the SWIR. The results showed different effects of hydrothermal activity on the surface deposits. The normal marine sediments were predominantly calcium carbonate characterized by > 42% CaO and > 90% calcite, with a significant autochthonous marine contribution to organic matter (OM) and a predominance of lower molecular weight alkanols and fatty acids; they were uninfluenced by hydrothermal activity but received some terrigenous input represented by abundant high molecular weight n-alkanes with an odd-over-even predominance. The near-field metalliferous sediments and hydrothermal deposits were very different. Some near-field metalliferous sediments were influenced by low-temperature hydrothermal activity, and their distributions of elements and minerals were similar to those of hydrothermal deposits, which were characterized by abundant Fe/Si and opal/nontronite. Other near-field metalliferous sediments were evidently influenced by mixing of high-temperature hydrothermal sulfides typically containing abundant Cu/Zn. With respect to the organic matter assemblages, near-field deposits contained little evidence for thermal maturation of organic matter and all were characterized by a strong microbial signature, including hopanoids, isoprenoidal and non-isoprenoidal dialkyl glycerol ether lipids, and low molecular weight n-alkanes with an even carbon number predominance. The far-field metalliferous sediments, despite the influence of non-buoyant plumes and slightly higher concentrations of hydrothermal-derived metals (e.g., Fe, Cu and Zn), had the same distribution of organic lipids and major mineral composition (> 90% calcite) as did normal marine sediments. Thus, the influence of non-buoyant plume inputs appears to have been minimal possibly due to the dilution of in situ microorganisms by normal marine organisms in sediment and seawater. Furthermore, these characteristics indicate inorganic indices based on abundant metal elements derived from the hydrothermal systems (such as Fe/Cu/Zn content, ∑REE/Fe, the ternary diagram of Fe, Cu×100 and Ca) are more sensitive, serving as better proxies than organic matter assemblages to differentiate the effects of diverse hydrothermal activity on surface deposits.

Zn isotopes in hydrothermal sulfides and their oxidation products along the south mid-Atlantic ridge: evidence of hydrothermal fluid deposition

Significant Zn isotope fractionation occurs during seafloor hydrothermal activities. Therefore, exploring variations in Zn isotope composition affected by hydrothermal fluids and oxidative processes would help to better understand hydrothermal fluid cycling and sulfide deposition on mid-ocean ridges. In this paper, the Zn isotope compositions of different types of sulfides and their oxidation products obtained from hydrothermal fields on the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge (13–15°S) were analyzed using a Neptune plus MC-ICP-MS. The δ66Zn ratios range from –0.14‰ to +0.38‰, and the average δ66Zn ratio is +0.12±0.06‰ (n=21, 2 SD) for all the studied sulfides and oxidation products. The Cu-rich sulfides have a slightly heavier Zn isotope composition (average δ66Zn=+0.19±0.07‰, n=6) than the Zn-rich sulfides (average δ66Zn=–0.02±0.06‰, n=5). The Zn isotope compositions of the oxidation products are similar to those of the Cu-rich sulfides, with an average δ66Zn ratio of 0.14±0.06‰ (n=10, 2 SD). The Zn isotope compositions of all the samples are generally within the ranges of sulfides from hydrothermal fields on other mid-ocean ridges, such as the East Pacific Rise (9°N, 21°N) and the Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse. However, the average Zn isotope composition indicates the presence of significantly lighter Zn isotopes relative to those reported in the literature (average δ66Zn=+0.39‰). The significant enrichment of the Zn-rich sulfides with light Zn isotopes reveals that kinetic fractionation likely occurs during mineral deposition. Furthermore, the Zn isotope compositions of the sulfides and their oxidation products (average δ66Zn=+0.12‰) are significantly lighter than the average Zn isotope composition of the ocean (δ66Zn=+0.5‰), which could further constrain the modern Zn isotope cycle in the ocean by serving as a sink for light Zn isotopes.

The influence of seafloor hydrothermal activity on major and trace elements of the sediments from the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Sediment samples obtained from the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge were analyzed for the major and trace elements by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results revealed that the contents of elements (e.g., Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, V, Co) were high in samples 22V-TVG10 and 26V-TVG05 from the sites near the hydrothermal areas, and low in sample 22V-TVG14, which was collected far from the hydrothermal areas. The contents of Ca, Sr and Ba in the samples showed opposite trends. A positive correlation between the concentrations of metallic elements (Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, Pb, V) and Fe in the samples were observed. These results are consistent with chemical evolution of the dispersing hydrothermal plume.
